Foundation Hails Special Master’s Proposal in Florida-Georgia Water Dispute
Atlanta – Kyle Wingfield, president and CEO of the Georgia Public Policy Foundation, released this statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court Special Master’s recommendation in the 6-year-old “water wars” dispute between Florida and Georgia:
The finding by New Mexico federal Judge Paul Kelly is the only reasonable outcome after Florida’s unfounded accusations. While couched in environmental concerns, the cap Florida sought on Georgia’s water usage in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river basin through 2050 has far less to do with Florida’s oysters than with Georgia’s economy.
We look forward to the Supreme Court accepting the Special Master’s recommendation. The water wars have gone on for far too long and cost both Georgia and Florida taxpayers far too much.
One positive outcome for Georgia through the costly water disputes with its neighbors through the decades is that Georgians have come to understand and appreciate the need to become stewards of this precious resource as our metro area population grows.
