Foundation’s Friedman Event in Savannah: ‘Exceptional’
Atlanta — Friday, July 31, would have been the 103rd birthday of economist Milton Friedman, the Nobel Prize winner and champion of school choice who died on November 16, 2006.
Friedman’s birthday is celebrated worldwide annually as “Friedman Legacy Day.” Last year, the Georgia Public Policy Foundation hosted Friedman Legacy for Freedom Day in Macon; more than 10,000 people at more than 100 events around the world gathered to recognize Friedman’s life, legacy and ideas.
This year, the Foundation celebrated with a Policy Briefing Luncheon in Savannah on Wednesday, July 29, at Vic’s on the River. Attendees from Coastal Georgia and as far away as Bainbridge joined the Foundation and the event sponsor, the Georgia Charter School Association, to hear keynote speaker Dr. Ben Scafidi discuss the legacy of Dr, Friedman and Georgia’s progress on school choice.
Scafidi is director of the Education Economics Center in the Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University and a Senior Fellow with the Georgia Public Policy Foundation and the Friedman Foundation.
Among the topics Scafidi discussed was the Educational Savings Account (ESA). Friedman championed a version of this, writing, “Government, preferably local governmental units, would give each child, through his parents, a specified sum to be used solely in paying for his general education; the parents would be free to spend this sum at a school of their own choice, provided it met certain minimum standards laid down by the appropriate governmental unit.”
“I thoroughly enjoyed the luncheon and learned a lot,” said Dr. Barry Dotson, Vice President for Student Affairs at Southeastern Technical College in Vidalia.
Deborah Rauers, an attendee from Savannah, called it “an exceptional program. … So much wisdom and experience for charter schools!”
And attendee John McCrae of Bainbridge, called it a “great event!”
